Rear disc brake conversion

On the front of my Europa I am running a Wilwood disc brake kit from RallyDesign (BK23M). This kit uses a Wilwood Powerlite forged aluminium caliper, which weighs half of an original caliper and 265mm solid brake disc (they also sell a kit with a vented disc). I am of the opinion that having a vented disc on a 600kg car is overkill. If the racing Caterhams don’t need vented discs, nor do we.

I have designed and built a rear disc brake conversion for S1, S2 and TC Europa’s that will match this front disc brake kit.

NOT for TC Special: these use a different rear hub design!

These kits will only require very minimal modifications to fit and fitting is completely reversable. It is always possible to return to the original drum brake setup.

Calipers

The kit uses the Wilwood Powerlite caliper. These are a four piston forged aluminium caliper and weigh about half of the original caliper. For the rear disc kit we will use the variant with 1.00″ pistons (Wilwood part number 120-8724). Depending on what kit you want you will need the caliper with the parking brake mechanism (Wilwood part number 120-9463).

These calipers have a variety of pad materials available: Wilwood, Mintex, Ferodo, EBC, Carbotech, etc. The pads range from mild street use to full race.

As mentioned before: It is easiest and most economic to buy the calipers locally. You can buy them from Wilwood US directly or a local distributor.

Brake Discs

We are using off the shelf brake discs from different OEMs, depending on the style of disc brake you want. These will be easy to source from any autoparts store. For each style of kit you will be able to buy a pair of discs for €/$20-30.
